Announcing: Self-Portrait w/ Table Series
I’m bored, so I’m going to take photos of myself at tables and post them here until doing so makes me more bored.
I’ll try to make them good.
Mixed Messages
I was in an eye doctor’s office today, acting as a driver for my mom, whose sclera has decided to intermittently inflict massive amounts of pain. Scattered about the waiting room were ads for Botox which contained two photos of an attractive female face at “maximum frown”. The before photo looked like a normal frown. The after photo looked like a borderline come-on.
Botox:...

What, exactly, is wrong with silence?
And how is annoyingly mediocre music an improvement upon it?

Freak Me - Silk
This was a #1 single, too.

Why were songs in the 90’s so cutesy and “adult contemporary.” Songs about “making love” or being “in love.”
Today’s “chart toppers” are about partying, dancing, drinking, sex, drugs; all sung with terrible grammar/english.
Eh.
O RLY?

Random Thought Before Leaving House
Back when I was hawking goods at Nordstrom I encountered multiple customers who would find a pair of jeans they wanted, only to reject them when they discovered they were button-fly. Two things:
1) Buttons come off faster than zippers when in a hurry. One motion (pull open the top one and the rest follow) versus two (undo button and unzip).
2) You are a grown man - you are so lazy that you...

I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS SHIT.
I SIGNED UP FOR EARTHQUAKES. AND HEAT WAVES.
TORNADOES? I COULD HAVE GONE TO CHICAGO FOR THAT SHIT.
No tornadoes here. We did have an earthquake a couple years ago (ok, it was in central Illinois, but it was felt here).
However, the current unseasonably warm weather...

At this point in my sports-watching life I’ve become a bit bored with football, not just because the Chicago Bears have been terrible, but also because the 11 minutes of action in an NFL game aren’t subject to the sort of scrutiny I’d like. Give me Nate Silver-style (scroll down) statistical analysis and views of the whole field instead of telling me what to think, and I’ll...

MOAR COFFEE. The most comprehensive collection of brewing guides I have ever seen.
Butthecoffee
There is a wonderful café near my house that could almost pass for a Spanish- or Italian-style bar. The layout is there, the soccer on televisions is there, the Coca-Cola with real sugar is there, but the alcohol and the good coffee are unfortunately not present.
And Nescafe has a spot on the menu.
Chicago, You Seemed Dead and Not Asleep Tonight
That is all for now. More tomorrow when the Power’s, CTA fatigue, and bike ride wear off.

Orange Juice
I just drank some.
More importantly, it was loaded with pulp. Up until I went to Italy, I was strictly a no pulp boy/man, but once I had spremuta d’arancia (freshly squeezed orange juice), I was converted. Too bad there’s no spremuta d’arancia rossa (blood oranges) in the U.S.; that stuff tastes like liquid candy that happens to be good for you. Yeah, it’s 4 Euro over...

This creeps me out a little, except that Sparks happened WAY before 2008, and actually I think it was banned that year.
Why are we (and by we, I mean culturally hegemonic society) so obsessed with classifying and ridiculing the hipster*?

I still maintain that the union of all smart male humans, nice male humans, and handsome male humans is not a set that is romantically and sexually disinterested in female humans.

What can I know? How can I know it?
I just watched The Seventh Seal for the first time, which sent me on a Wikipedia hyperlink rampage that ended smack in the middle of chess theory (with a brief glance at the rules for Scopa). What struck me was the utter disdain of whatever gaggle of Wikipedia chess-article-editors there is for people who play chess without consulting theory. I understand the desire to quantify things, and the...

I have two problems with horror films. 1) The idea of watching a graphic depiction of another person suffering violently for entertainment is somewhat disgusting to me. 2) Everyone in them is so fucking stupid. If anyone in horror movies ever made semi-rational choices I would perhaps find them less insufferable. So half the time they make me want to weep...
